Becoming a Tutor
Q.     What are the requirements for becoming a tutor? Who do I talk to if I am interested?
A.     You must have attended the University of Nevada, Reno for at least 1 year, have at least a 3.0 g.p.a., and have completed the courses you would like to tutor with an "A" or a "B". Faculty support for your application is also very important. Your application must be accompanied by letters of recommendation from University of Nevada, Reno academic faculty in the departments in which you would like to tutor. Contact Marsha Urban at Urban@unr.edu or 784-6801 with questions about the application process.

Description of Services
Q.     Do you have to attend both days if you sign up for a biweekly session?
A.     Yes.
Q.     What services are offered through the Center?
A.     We offer group tutoring and walk-in tutoring for math and physics.
Q.     Who does the tutoring?
A.     Our tutors are full-time students who have completed the courses they are tutoring with an A or a B. All tutors must be recommended by at least two University of Nevada, Reno faculty and carry a 3.0 or better grade point average. Tutors are successful students who are committed to helping others be equally successful.
Q.     How often can I get tutoring?
A.     You can sign up for group sessions for as many courses as you like. But you may sign up for only one session for each course. You may attend as many walk-in lab hours as your schedule permits.
Q.     Why can't tutors for all subjects be available all day?
A.     Since our tutors are students too, they must have time to attend their own courses. We hire as many tutors and offer as many hours as our budget permits.
Q.     Why can't I get tutoring three times per week if I want it?
A.     You can if you supplement group sessions with visits to the walk-in lab.
Q.     Should I wait until I am struggling to get tutoring help?
A.     No, identify your most difficult course(s) and sign up for tutoring as soon as possible.
Q.     How long do tutoring sessions last?
A.     Group sessions meet for 50 minutes twice a week. Students may visit the walk-in lab any time a tutor is on duty and can stay as long as they like.
Q.     Whats the difference between biweekly tutoring and walk-in labs?
A.     Choose group tutoring for your most demanding courses. This service provides continuity of support throughout the semester. Your tutor will have the opportunity to know you better as a learner and thus to help you improve your grasp of the content and learning process for the course. Our walk-in math and physics lab is the most flexible of our offerings. We post the lab schedule online, and students may visit the lab anytime during the open hours.
Q.     Can I sign up for a session if I know I am going to be 15 minutes late every time?
A.     No.
Q.     Do I have to stay the whole 50 minutes?
A.     Yes. Leaving the session early is disruptive to other students.
Q.     If I have questions about tutoring, where can I go to get them answered?
A.     Visit our office in the Thompson Building, Suite 100 or call 784-6801.
Q.     Can you describe the activities in a biweekly tutoring session?
A.     The tutor will begin by getting to know each of the students and helping them get to know each other. It's important to get some background on the individuals involved before discussing the format of the sessions. The format will vary a bit between disciplines, but it is always based on the students' questions. Do or make a very serious attempt to do all of your reading and homework before you come to tutoring. Doing so will allow you use your precious tutoring time to clarify the most difficult concepts and answer the most difficult questions.
Q.     Can you describe biweekly tutoring?
A.     Group tutoring requires a regular committment to attend from the students involved. We encourage students to seek group tutoring for the courses that pose the greatest challenge for them.
Q.     Do I have to pay to participate in tutoring and the workshops?
A.     No, as long as you attend sessions you are enrolled in regularly. If the course turns out to be easier than you expected, there is no penalty for dropping tutoring at mid-semester as long as you inform your tutor.
Enrollment Questions
Q.     If I submit a request for a biweekly session, how will I know when it starts?
A.     When you are placed in a session, you will get an email message telling you when and where the session will meet. Please understand that we cannot guarantee placement in a tutoring session. We strongly encourage you to join an existing session for your class if one is available. If not, submit 8 or more hours of availability to give us good odds of matching your availability with that of a qualified tutor and at least one other student.
Q.     Can I sign up from any computer?
A.     Yes, all you need is access to the internet. If you prefer, you may visit our office in the Thompson Building, Suite 100. There is always someone here to help you enroll in tutoring.
Q.     How do I sign up for tutoring on the web?
A.     Visit http://www.unr.edu/acssv/. Select "log in" on the top of the screen. Follow the steps. When you complete the registration process, select the type of tutoring you'd like and follow the directions on the screen to enroll. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our office at 781-6801 or visit our office in the Thompson Building, Suite 100.
Trouble Shooting
Q.     I have checked boxes on the scheduling grid to indicate the times I am available for biweekly tutoring, but they disappear when I hit submit. What am I doing wrong?
A.     Group sessions meet twice a week on Mon/Wed, Tues/Thurs and Tues/Fri. Make sure that the availability you are submitting follows that pattern. For example, if you check availability on both Tuesday and Thursday at 11 a.m., your availability will be saved because we can create a session at that time. If you check Monday at 10 a.m. and Tuesday at 11 a.m., your availability will not be saved because we cannot create a tutoring session in that time frame.
Q.     I was dropped from tutoring because I no-showed my tutoring session. I want to get back into tutoring, what do I do?
A.     Contact the office to pay the $10 fee. If there are reasons why you think the fee should not be charged in your case, then write the coordinator at urban@unr.edu explaining your situation. She will let you know whether you can be reinstated without paying the fee within 48 hours.
Q.     I submitted a request for tutoring a week ago and haven't heard anything from your office. What's going on?
A.     We cannot guarantee placement in tutoring. We very strongly encourage students to check on tutor availability before submitting their own availability for tutoring. You can do this by logging in and selecting the "Tutor Availability" link o. For the best odds of placement, submit 8 or more hours of availability and overlap as many of those hours as possible with tutor availability. Be aware that your request will time out. If we haven't been able to place you within 21 days, and you haven't logged into the website to update your availability, etc., your request will be deleted. If that happens, you will receive an email notice encouraging you to login and submit a new request. Be as flexible as you can be with your availability and check your email often. And be confident that the administrative staff and the tutors in the Academic Skills Center are working hard to meet your tutoring needs!
